CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AT KEHJE SEWEN

While the world was busy planning their year-end celebrations the Post Release Monitoring (PRM) team in Kehje Sewen was diligently conducting their routine monitoring of released orangutans in the Kehje Sewen Forest, East Kalimantan.

The patrol began before sunset and luckily we bumped into Casey and Hamzah not too far from the campsite. They seemed to be close to each other with Hamzah following Casey everywhere she went. They spent most of their time under a tree eating ginger leaves together.

The second day patrol started on an overcast morning and right before noon it started raining.  Our patrol however continued and we kept checking for signals which transmit from the unique radio implants which every released orangutan is fitted with. However due to heavy rain the PRM team had to halt their work for a couple of days.

Kehje Sewen finally saw a bit of sunshine after heavy downpours and towards the end of the week, we managed to detect Yayang who seemed to be very active; playing and moving around through the trees. We also observed her on the ground as she finished building a nest for her nap.

Close to where Yayang made her nest, her offspring, Sayang, was also spotted. He was also very active; climbing, swinging around, and eating forest fruits.

A few hours after meeting Yayang and Sayang, the team picked up Mona’s signal coming from the Emerson release area and they spotted her on an eating spree. Our observation revealed that Mona seems to prefer spending most of her time on the ground and loves to eat young leaves and rattan fruit.

Even though some of us did not take a single day off over Christmas and New Year, it was good to observe our orangutans living a healthy and happy life.
