LESTA AND LEWIS IN THE WATER

The monitoring team was happy to find Lesta and her son Lewis near Karangan Hara. They both looked very healthy and were discovered playing in the water, an activity that orangutans indulge in only when it is hot and they are thirsty.

It was a scorching hot day and a few other orangutans were also found cooling down by the banks of the river. Initially Lewis was hesitant to get into the water, but with encouragement from his mother, who was already in the water, he finally took the plunge albeit only for a quick dip. Once back on land, they continued climbing the trees to look for young leaves to eat.

Our observations indicate that Lesta and Lewis have adapted very well to their new home in Bukit Batikap. We are looking forward to them moving deeper into the forest a they gain more confidence and experience. Way to go, Lesta and Lewis!
