NAUGHTY NOEL

In the recent month Noel had given us quite a headache. He was often seen wandering around the camp in Kehje Sewen Forest and attempting to loot our camp, especially during the day when most technicians were monitoring other orangutans in the forest. But finally in the beginning of September, we managed to evacuate Noel to the acclimatization enclosure at Gunung Belah.

In addition, back in mid-August we also observed a small wound on Noel’s head, near the top of his head. However, due to his agility and cleverness, we always failed to catch him. On September 1, vet Putra from Samboja Lestari who was on duty at Camp Lesik tried several times to sedate him with a tranquilizer gun, but Noel always managed to escape. The next day, September 2, the team at Camp Lesik deliberately distracted Noel to divert his attention and finally vet Putra succeeded in sedating Noel. Noel’s wound was checked, cleaned and thoroughly treated by vet Putra. Then Noel was moved to the acclimatization enclosure at Gunung Belah for further observation and also as a “punishment” for his mischiefs during the month.

While Noel spent his time in the enclosure, on September 3 beautiful Casey came over for a visit. At that time Noel was fed forest fruits by the technicians. Casey took Noel’s hand and pulled his hand as if trying to get him out of the enclosure. Throughout the day Casey stayed in the area around the enclosure. Maybe she wanted to make sure that her friend was just fine.

After three days in the enclosure and vet Putra was certain that his wound had healed completely, Noel was ready to be re-released on September 5 at 8 am. Once the enclosure door was opened, Noel came straight out, climbed the enclosure, then went down on the back of the enclosure and ran across a small stream towards Tyo River in the eastern part of Kehje Sewen Forest.

We will keep monitoring his condition and whereabouts. The very next day, a couple of our technicians on their way back to camp from their monitoring duty actually met Noel again near a spring. It was raining and Noel was seen busy eating some shoots while covering his head with an umbrella made of a large leaf. They left Noel in peace and hope he doesn’t continue being so mischievous anymore. Ah, naughty Noel!
