ORANGUTANS DOING WELL IN KEHJE SEWEN

We are delighted to report that the six orangutans released in December last year – Signe, Bungaran, Indonesia, Cita, Valen, and Bong – are adapting well to their new home in the Kehje Sewen Forest. Mother-infant pair Signe and Bungaran are thriving in their new environment, with Signe doing a great job teaching her son all about life in the wild.

Our PRM team are taking turns monitoring the orangutans; and this week we continued our ongoing nest-to-nest observations, which involves leaving camp before dawn to locate Signe and Bungaran still in their night nest, then following them to record their activities throughout the day. Typically, a nest-to-nest follow ends when the orangutans build their night nest and retire for the day.

Our team watched Signe begin her day at around 9 a.m., when she left her nest with Bungaran clinging to her belly and set off to forage from one tree to another. Signe ate liana bark whilst Bungaran looked on; after a while, he started to follow suit.

Little Bungaran was spotted occasionally trying new things within his mother’s reach. He climbed and tried young leaves, with Signe keeping a watchful eye over him.

Signe and Bungaran ate a variety of natural foods, including bark and young leaves, and spent time moving actively through the trees. Rain began to fall at around midday, and Signe quickly grabbed a huge Macaranga gigantea leaf to use as an umbrella for herself and Bungaran.

The team followed the pair until Signe built her night nest, then headed back to Nles Mamse camp satisfied both mother and infant were settled in their nest for the night.

Our PRM team will continue to monitor Signe, Bungaran, Indonesia, Cita, Valen, and Bong daily for the first month to ensure they are adapting well to life in the Kehje Sewen Forest.
