EARTH DAY 2024: PLANET VS PLASTICS
Every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day to honour the planet that is home to us all.
Thankfully the weather has improved over the past few weeks in East Kalimantan, and our team at the BOS Foundation Orangutan Reintroduction Center-Samboja Lestari was able to start reforestation of the area that was damaged by fire in September and October.
This process involves replanting of the burned areas, construction of water catchment areas/pools and establishing land new trails for easier access throughout Samboja Lestari. The water pools - locally known as embung – have been established to collect rainwater. During the fire outbreak in Samboja Lestari a month ago, the fire fighting team heavily depended on the water from these pools and it is essential that we maintain and expand this critical resource.
Helped by a couple of overseas visiting volunteers, the Samboja Lestari team enthusiastically commenced replanting of the destroyed areas.
Our volunteer program in Samboja Lestari is implemented in collaboration with The Great Projects (TGP). Thanks to their help, we have replanted more than 300 seedlings within the burnt areas.

Meanwhile, the Samboja Lestari team received fantastic support from VICO Indonesia in constructing new trails and water pools. We have finished digging 12 new pools, and additional locations are still in progress.
The construction of new trails and water pools will help the Samboja Lestari team manage future possibile fire events.
BOS Foundation will continue to ensure that orangutan rehabilitation and care is top priority and that the 700 orangutans we are currently taking care of in Samboja Lestari, East Kalimantan and Nyaru Menteng, Central Kalimantan will have the best chance of future reintroduction.

It was a usual day at the Nyaru Menteng forest school, where young orangutans were learning from one another while their human surrogate mothers looked on from below.
Our Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) team at Camp Himba Pambelum in Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park (TNBBBR), Central Kalimantan, encountered Suci, a young female orangutan, three times back in 2023.
