JOB DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION

The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Staff member to join the Research, Grants, and Animal Welfare Division.

The successful candidate will be based at the BOS Foundation Headquarters in Bogor, with occasional travel to field sites as required. The position will work closely with the Head of the Research, Grants, and Animal Welfare Division and collaborate with field teams, veterinarians, animal welfare staff, students, and external partners to support science-based conservation and animal welfare initiatives.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to orangutan conservation through research, data management, scientific analysis, publication, project development, and evidence-based decision-making. While occasional fieldwork may be required, the role is primarily focused on research, data management, scientific analysis, and scientific publication.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, maintain, and conduct quality control of research databases, including behavioural, welfare, veterinary, environmental, rehabilitation, and post-release monitoring datasets.

  • Compile, process, and analyse research data using appropriate statistical methods and software to support scientific research and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts, technical reports, conference presentations, and other research outputs for publication and dissemination.
  • Support the design, implementation, and monitoring of research projects related to orangutan conservation, rehabilitation, animal welfare, and habitat management.
  • Coordinate with field teams and other BOS Foundation departments to facilitate data collection, ensure data quality, and support project implementation across operational sites.
  • Assist in the development of research proposals, grant applications, donor reports, and other funding-related documents.
  • Contribute to strengthening research capacity within BOS Foundation through training, knowledge sharing, and the promotion of evidence-based approaches to conservation and animal welfare management.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Primatology, Forestry, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Science, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Wildlife Management, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience conducting wildlife research, particularly involving primates.
  • Experience collecting, managing, and analysing behavioural, ecological, welfare, veterinary, or environmental data, including long-term research databases.
  • Experience working in wildlife conservation, behavioural ecology, animal welfare, or related fields.
  • Experience writing or contributing to peer-reviewed scientific publications and research grant applications.
  • Experience using GIS and spatial analysis software (e.g., QGIS or ArcGIS).

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Experience in scientific research and data collection.
  • Experience managing and processing large datasets.
  • Experience conducting data analyses using R, Python, or similar analytical software.
  • Experience writing scientific reports and/or manuscripts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong organisational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote field locations when required.
